After all, acknowledging you've been unwillingly moved down the ladder can smart a bit, no matter how tough your ego may be. But since the job market tanked some eight years ago, more people have had to accept such a fact of life if they want to hang onto a job. While you may be tempted to quit when you get a demotion, that's not always a smart move. You could be facing a long job hunt if you do, and how will you pay the bills in the meantime? In addition, you may face the same consequences in the future if you haven't really considered why you were demoted in the first place. So once you get past the shock and hurt of being demoted, its time to think about: Sitting down with the boss and try to find out exactly why this happened.Let the boss know that youre interested in focusing on the problems and fixing them. It could be the boss will tell you that its merely industry restructuring, and its happening throughout the company. In that case, you need to consider your future job security not only with your current employer, but within the industry. Considering your overall value.Do you need to think about training and additional schooling in another area? Maybe jobs in your industry are being sent overseas or phased out because of technology. In that case, you need to seriously look at how you can get training in areas that are expected to grow and prosper. Setting new goals.With the boss's input, you should immediately establish some new goals to get you back on track. Get a professional mentor to help keep you focused and committed, and make sure you meet with the boss more frequently to ensure you're headed in the right direction. All of this will be difficult, of course. Its natural that you will be angry and upset, and going back to work after a demotion will be tough. Still, keep in mind that even if you want to quit, youre still going to need a good recommendation and youre still going to have to explain to another employer about why you left the job. So hanging onto that job is better in the short term until you figure out what you really want to do. Of course, your decision may be that you need to look for another job. Maybe the job was never a good fit in the first place (you disliked your duties, hated the hours, etc.), and the demotion was something that resulted from your lack of full commitment to the job. The point is that whether you decide to tough it out and earn back your old job (or an even better one), or leave the employer, take the time to make the demotion a learning experience. This is how you improve happiness AND productivity at the same time - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Yesterday I spoke to 200 people at Umbraco Codegarden 2010, an annual IT developer conference for web developers who use the open source CMS system Umbraco. Niels Hartvig, the founder of Umbraco, has a clear vision that focuses on both a good platform (so that the actual product is great) but equally on creating a great community, so that people want to be actively engaged in sharing knowledge, developing code and helping each other. I kicked the conference off with a high-energy presentation on happiness at work and how these 250 coders, consultants and evangelists can create a happy community and it was very well received. Then Niels gave his keynote in which he also celebrated the people who have gone above and beyond in their work on Umbraco. Before I went on, Niels told me that here was one person in particular, that they wanted to celebrate for his excellent work and energy. So this is what they gave him: They bough him a really fancy espresso machine and had his name and award engraved on it. Not only did it make him happy, it will also keep him caffeinated and highly productive :o) The only problem is that the damn thing weights 18 kilos (35 pounds) and Shannon will have to lug it home to Australia. This is an excellent way to celebrate a person in front of 250 of his peers because its fun, personalized, quirky and relevant all the hallmarks of a good reward. According to the Pew Charitable Fund, Montanas eastern neighbor currently leads in terms of job growth, especially in the areas of energy and construction, two sectors that are also doing well in other Western states, along with high-tech and engineering fields. So if youre freshly out of college or expect to be so soon, consider life in the West. If youre up for adventure and a possibly bigger paycheck, relocating might be a wise move. North Dakota An oil boom and low unemployment spell good news for job-seekers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the state had the highest percentage growth of non-farm employment between October 2012 and October 2013: 3.5 percent, with the addition of nearly 16,000 jobs. The Fiscal Times said entry-level oil workers average around $112,000 annually, and certain engineering jobs like drilling consultants can earn more than $238,000. This drilling consultant position requires a degree and five to 10 years of experience, but no degree is needed for the equally well-paying skilled position of a directional driller. The Fiscal Times warns job seekers that few oil jobs involve 40-hour desk jobs most require long hours in extreme temperatures and theres frequent travel between sites. Many oil workers live in dormitories/camps and receive infrequent visits home. It appeals to those who pursuit activities all year-round recreational pursuits. Colorado boasts world-class skiing, plus plenty of mountains to explore. Cities like Denver and Colorado Springs are also becoming known for high-tech industries while places like Boulder have more of a laid-back yet inviting mellow vibe. The Colorado Business Outlook, created by University of Colorados Leeds School of Business, said the state is expected to add 66,000 jobs in 2014, the highest annual amount since 81,000 were added in 2000. Gains are expected in everything from education and health services to natural resources. Denver ranks fourth on Forbes list of The Best Cities for New College Graduates in 2013 right below Houston and above Minneapolis/St. Paul. Unemployment is at a satisfying 7.4 percent, and annual income is $50,300. Even better, the median price of Denver apartments is $970, a definite deal when Bay area places are in the thousands.
